We’re in Rio

We arrived in Rio Friday. We went on a tour to the huge Christ statue on the mountain yesterday and my family was blessed by the priest at the chapel up there. This morning we went to the beach today. I bought a light dress from a street vendor for just $5. It’s the same blue as my swim suit, comes below the knees and has string straps. It will be perfect for slipping over my swim suit after the pool.

We’ve gotten outside a little every day and are starting to get tans. Tomorrow we board the cruise ship. We’ve already met some other people who will be on our cruise that are also staying in this hotel. Not sure if there will be any other kids or not.

We’re off

We are leaving tomorrow for our vacation. I don’t know if I’ll be able to post while I’m gone or not. If not, I’ll be sure to give lots of details of our trip when we get back. Today is hectic last minute errands and packing. Richard is the only one who has decent summer shoes. We’ll get them in Rio for the rest of us. I found 7 dress shirts and 3 dress pants in a closet that fit Richard. I also found 3 dress up dresses for Karen so they are both taken care of for evenings. That’s quite a relief because I wasn’t looking forward to buying that in Rio. I’ve over packed and my husband has under packed clothes as usual.

Anyway, just a quick note to let you all know we’re on vacation. I’ll be back the end of April. Hope everyone has a happy, healthy time until then.

I’m loving Turbo Jam

It’s been about 3 weeks that I’ve been doing Turbo Jam. At first it was hard to get coordinated. I kept falling and tripping over myself. Still, it was fun and I didn’t give up. I started mostly doing Learn & Burn where she introduces the moves or 20 Minute Jam, a great 20 minute workout.

Recently, I’ve been doing Cardio Party, a 45 minute cardio routine. It’s actually easier coordination wise than the 20 Minute Jam but because it’s longer works you hard.  My favorite thing about Cardio Party is actually the cool down routine at the end. It’s great and keeps me from wanting to push stop halfway through when things (kids, phone, etc) get crazy around the house. There’s also an ab routine called Ab Jam which is ok, but rather hard on my back. I haven’t tried Turbo Sculpt or another video called Kick, Punch, and Jam yet.

Anyway, since starting Turbo Jam, my weight loss has picked up again. Before then I had a started to plateau. But the best thing is that I’m actually enjoying doing it. That’s right people, I’m enjoying exercise other than riding a bike. You don’t do repetitive exercises like with a lot of traditional cardio programs. Turbo Jam keeps you moving. You’re always changing positions and using lots of different muscles so you’re building endurance, muscle mass, coordination, and balance at the same time while burning major calories.

Yet it isn’t high impact unless you want it to be. You determine the intensity level. If you just want to move around a bit, fine. If you really want to kick it up a notch and push hard, great. All with the same workout.

When finished with a Turbo Jam workout I feel great. I’m tired, but in a good way. After I get rested and cool off, I have lots of energy. I don’t feel wasted like after some exercise programs. Unfortunately, I’ve been doing them in the afternoon or evening which isn’t necessarily when I need extra energy. I’ll have to try doing it in the morning and see how the day goes. I’m also less stressed. I can take any frustration out kicking and punching, twisting and turning.

With just about all exercise, I like how I feel after I’m done. I feel a sense of accomplishment for finishing the workout. I looked forward to how I felt after I exercised but not always the exercise itself, which made it easier to find excuses not to exercise. I’m not having that with Turbo Jam. I’m looking forward to doing it, not just getting it done. It’s fun and goes quickly.

I’m leaving for a month vacation in 3 days and taking my Turbo Jam with me. I want to keep the great results coming. I don’t want all the good food to set me back.

Snow, snow and more snow

I just got some unexpected exercise. It’s snowed like a foot Thursday on top of the 8 inches we got earlier in the week so our driveway is a mess. I’m stuck just out of the garage and spent the last 20 minutes trying to dig the car out. Unsuccessfully. I had to crawl out the other side door. The snow in the woods is over my knees. I guess I’m staying home this afternoon. Grrr. We really needed to get to town today too.

Fitness update 2009 #10

This week I’m down to 161.25 at the lowest but we went to lunch yesterday and I’m up to 163 this morning. I’d better do the exercise video again. It’s been a few days since I last used them.

I bought a new swim suit. My old one was too big and falling apart. It is a size 12 TYR that’s dark blue with white flowers down the front. I wore it the first time at water aerobics Wednesday evening. The instructor had me come up on deck and teach part with her (squats). Then after class in the locker room she suggested I get certified as a fitness instructor. Another instructor was there and agreed. Hmmm. Might be fun to look into.

We’re busy getting ready to go on our trip. We leave Tuesday night. This may be the last fitness update until we return at the end of April. I hope I’m able to at least maintain my weight on the cruise. It would be great if I could continue to lose and meet the weight goal this month. As long as I don’t make too many unhealthy eating choices and only eat a reasonable portion size, I should be ok. We plan to exercise everyday not in port and possibly some on those days as well depending upon how much walking we’ve done. I’m not looking forward to airport food for the 2 days it takes to get from Alaska to Rio. Then we have 5 days before the cruise. It’s 12 degrees here now but in the upper 80’s and low 90’s in Rio. We’re going to melt! I’m not sure if we’ll be up to leaving the hotel if it has a good air conditioner.

The to-do list keeps growing while the time is shrinking. The kids need new shoes and some summer clothes. We haven’t yet begun to pack although I have lists made of what we will be packing. I want to go to water aerobics Monday evening but doubt if there will be time. By then I think we’ll be frantic trying to finish all the last minute important items on the to-do list.

My new swim suit

I bought myself a new swim suit yesterday. My old one is now too big and falling apart. I went shopping at WalMart but didn’t find anything. They had 2 that I liked until I tried them on. The first one had a modesty flap over the front that hung down a little. It looked frumpy on me and I was afraid it would be too hot with all that fabric. The other one fit fine until I bent over and just about fell out of it. There was no good way to hold the straps up at the top of the back when bending over. So I got 2 pair sandals but no swim suit.

After dinner I went to the gym to see what they might have. Theirs are more expensive exercise swim suits. I found 3 that I liked. 2 had the same fabric just different cuts. I went to the locker room and tried them on. Some of the ladies from the water aerobics were there and they helped me make a decision. The one I got is dark blue with white flowers down the middle of the front. It is a size 12 made by TYR. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a chance to try it in the pool since I had to leave right away for an appointment.
