He won!

The kids had another dog sled race this afternoon. There weren’t as many kids today. Some were sick and others had parents entered in a race downtown so they weren’t there. Anyway, Richard and Karen entered the 1 dog class as usual. There were 4 kids entered. Richard came in third with a time of 53.64 seconds. He missed second place by 9 hundredths of a second. Karen was fourth with a time of one minute, 4.1 seconds. She has a slow dog but she has the most fun. Big smile crossing the finish.

After the 1 dog, they were getting ready for the 2 dog and asked if Richard was entered. I asked him if he wanted to and he said yes. I was told there’s the dogs and here’s the sled so go get a bib. There was one other girl entered in the 2 dog race. She started first. How it works is they start the next musher when the first has turned around at the halfway point. The other girl was having dog trouble. They kept trying to turn around early so we had a longer wait at the start than normal. Then, when he was ready to start, an official jumped in the bag to ride to help Richard pass since the other girl was still having problems. Well, the pass never happened so he left Richard halfway and he was on his own. Back they came. Richard won by nearly 4 minutes!

Now he’s really excited and wants to do 2 dogs again every time. There’s another race tomorrow but not sure if we will go or not. The bad part is I didn’t bring my camera because I didn’t expect Richard to run 2 dogs and the weather was snowing.

Fitness update 2009 #9; real progress

This past week has been a great week other than having the flu over the weekend. Even that was a blessing in disguise since it allowed me to break through a plateau. I’ve lost 2.5 pounds this week, which puts me at 162 just under the monthly goal. I think I ‘m going to meet this month’s weight goal even with the short month and gain at the beginning.

I’ve now lost a total of 10 pounds. Yeah! I finally am starting to feel like I’m making real change in my life. When I had lost only 2-5 pounds I was excited but realized it could easily have been just water weight or normal body fluctuations. However, 10 pounds is a more solid amount and indicates real loss has started. There’s also visible changes as well in smaller clothes and more energy.

It’s been 2 months and I feel more confident in what I eat. Using the No S Diet has helped with that. I’m learning to curb emotional eating. Recently I’ve been replacing it with brief exercise or Bible reading but defiantly no more munching while watching tv. We only eat at the table. This way you won’t overeat because you are distracted. Plus you miss whatever you are watching while eating at the table so you are less likely to eat during your favorite shows unless you’re truly hungry.

Exercise has almost become a habit that I miss on days when I can’t or don’t exercise. The new videos have helped a lot with that. Exercise doesn’t have to be drudgery. Once you find something you enjoy, it’s less like work and more fun. It may take awhile to find it, but don’t just give up altogether after trying a few “boring” things. Remember, it takes 3 weeks to make a habit. This includes regular exercise.

One thing I don’t talk about much in these fitness updates is spiritual health. This is important too. Along those lines, daily Bible reading and prayer are essential for maintaining good spiritual health. I’m in the process of reading the King James Bible (often simply referred to as KJV) through from cover to cover. This was originally supposed to be a 90 day thing. Instead it has taken almost a year. I’m pretty excited to be finishing Psalms and starting Proverbs today. I’ve enjoyed this book of the Bible and found much refreshment after some of the heavier reading in the Old Testament.

All but one of the new dresses I bought too small fit me this week. That one is only a little too small so should fit soon. I’m going to getrid of my fat skirts. They don’t stay up at all now. No sense keeping them around. I don’t want to ever wear them again, even if I do really like one of them, I disgust the size. Out they go today! Goodbye size 16 and XL! Oh, I tried on a pair of old size 11/12 jeans. I looked melted and poured in but I could fasten them. I haven’t done that in about 4 years. Not that I wear jeans anymore, but at least they give me a size guide.

I’ve been doing the new exercise video programs this week. I think they are mostly to blame for my great loss. I’m not quite so uncoordinated with the Turbo Jam as I was at first, except “twist”. That one still confuses me and I’m not very good at knowing which side or switching sides. The Rockin Body has a great 10 minute ab routine. I like it better than the Turbo Jam abs. The combination of the two programs is a lot of fun. I can find a great workout for any mood. I don’t feel like exercise is a thing to get through to feel accomplished for the day. I look forward to it instead.

I didn’t make it to water aerobics yesterday for several reasons. First, I wasn’t feeling very well in the afternoon and took a nap instead. I need a new swimsuit but didn’t have a chance to buy one yet. The one I have is now too big. Ray was working on taxes and couldn’t watch the kids. I didn’t want to put them in the play center at the gym since they are still a little sick. I’m a bit disappointed since I was looking forward to going again.

Eating was pretty good. I didn’t eat much over the weekend because of being sick. We went to Subway a few times. At the store I bought some healthy fresh things, fixings for turkey wraps, and frozen seasoned salmon fillets. That should be enough food to last until we leave on our trip in 10 days.

Cruise bye diet

As many of you readers know, we are going on a month long cruise. We leave 2 weeks from yesterday. I’m so excited. I still can’t believe we’re going, it just hasn’t sunk in yet. It’s all happened so fast.

You also know I’m on a journey to reclaim my life from being overweight. Those two seem mutually exclusive at first. I’ve been on cruises before and know they have lots of indulgent, rich foods. Cream sauces and soups, appetizers, starchy main dishes and of course desserts. That’s just the main dining room. There’s also the buffet upstairs and hamburgers or hot dogs by the pool.

However, there’s also more healthy options like lean cuts of meat and fish. You can get the sauce on the side sometimes. Have a salad with low fat dressing on the side instead of heavy appetizer. The buffet has a salad bar with lots of fresh veggies and fruit. There’s also a sandwich bar you can pile on the veggies with whole grain breads. They usually have at least one vegetarian main dish on the menu at each meal. Since we have the kids with us, we’ll probably skip the midnight munchy bar.

So with a little will power and knowledge, a cruise doesn’t have to be a death blow to healthy eating. There’s also a mini gym and walking for exercise so hopefully if we don’t loose weight we can keep from gaining any. Still, we need to actually lose some weight in order to stay on our overall weight goal track. I’m already in the habit of making healthy eating choices and know what to stay away from. That’s going to be hard, but not impossible.

Get movin’ to feel better

I’m still sick today. I spent all yesterday afternoon, evening and this morning in bed mainly sleeping. I’m feeling a little better today but still pretty blah. By this afternoon I was pretty sore from laying around so much and probably general aches from being sick. Rather than take a pill, I decided to exercise a little.

I started a 20 minute Rockin Body but that was way too much cardio and I didn’t want to get short of breath. I did the Turbo Jam 20 minute exercise instead. I didn’t do the Turbo part and took it easy the rest of the time. I’m feeling a bit better now. Not so stiff. Another good thing is that I wasn’t quite so uncoordinated as last time I did Turbo Jam. A few more sessions and I think I’d like to try the full 45 minute routine.

Later I was still feeling good so I did Mark & Move and Hard Core Abs on Rockin Body. Mark & Move was pretty good, basic intro to the moves he does. Hard Core Abs was the most fun ab routine I’ve ever done. But, boy, don’t take that to mean it was wimpy. I can definitely feel it. I’m going to keep doing that one more often. It wasn’t the usual slow crunch or sit-up. Rather it was 10 minutes standing and high energy. The cool down left a bit to be desired though.

Perhaps gentle exercise will help me feel better faster now that I’m over the fever. I don’t know if the exercise will help squeeze and sweat the toxins out of my muscles and body, but I don’t think it will hurt. I just need to be sure not to overdo it. Plus, at least it will help me from being so weak when I get well.

I’m sick

Hey everybody, remember I said I thought I may be getting sick. Well, it’s official. I’m now sick. 😦

Chest congestion, and stuffy head seem to be the worst. I also have a rather high fever (102.3 last time I checked). I’m coughing up green gunk. I suppose that’s good but, yuck. Better to get it out though. I’m drinking my get well tea and resting as much as I can.

I did briefly go out today. I misread the kids mushing schedule and thought today was the last race. However when I got there it was all adults, the kids evidently have this week off. Oh well.

I’m not sure how much I’ll be around if I get to feeling worse. On the good side is that my weight is down a bit more today. It should be down again tomorrow unless I eat because I’m sick. Sometimes I munch way too much when I’m sick. Other times I can’t eat hardly anything. I’ll just have to wait and see how this cold makes me.

Anyway, I just thought I’d let you know what’s going on if I disappear for a few days from blogging.

At what cost?

I just read an article that said Sec. of State Hillary Clinton (that still sounds strange to me) is more interested in the global economy than human rights. This troubles me. At what cost is she willing to overlook basic human rights in order to concentrate on the economy. I agree that the global economy is in a crisis right now, but we shouldn’t back down on the US commitment to human rights.

Is she going to overlook if countries violate human rights in order to improve their economies? I hope not. I hope she won’t pursue global economic concerns at the expense of human rights. They are both important. It would be worse if she were to condone countries who abuse human rights to boost their economies. She needs to be vigilant against this. She needs to take a stand to say that the US won’t overlook human rights violations in the sake of economic progress.

Human rights aren’t just important for good times, but also for the tough times we’re in now. Companies and countries may be tempted to use sweat shops and child labor and other unfair labor practices to regain their competitive advantage. This cannot be allowed. However, this needs to be balanced so workers are willing to compromise with employers in danger of going bankrupt. For instance, employees should be willing to take a pay cut in order to keep their jobs. Afterall, which is worse $10/hour pay cut or no job because you held out for more money and the company went broke trying to pay you the higher wage?

Countries, companies, and employees each need to pay close attention to the big picture right now. We need a balance of basic human rights and reasonable workers’ rights in the light of economic viability for the company and countries. I also understand that there are many human rights issues which are separate from economic and workers rights issues. Still, we can’t just say anything goes as long as it benefits the economy. Nor can we say workers’ rights at any cost to the employers including bankruptcy. If the world is to pull up out of this recession and prevent a depression, a balance needs to be achieved. I hope Mrs. Clinton understands this. However, from her comments in regards to China, she seems off to an unsure start in achieving this balance.

Fitness update 2009 #8; new videos

I’ve lost a pound and half this week, putting me just under 165. I still have another pound and a half to lose before meeting this month’s goal. I gained back some of last month’s loss at the beginning of this month so with the shorter month, I’m to work extra hard these last few weeks. Overall, I’ve lost 5 pounds this year.

We’ve been spending a fair amount of time in the pool. I’ve been doing water aerobics Wednesday evenings. We also have been to the pool two other times during the week.

There here! Yesterday’s mail had the Turbo Jam. I just checked to tracking code for Rockin Body and it’s here. Yeah! It seems they’ve both had an adventure getting to me. It took 2 weeks for Rockin Body to go from Washington state up here supposedly Priority Mail. Turbo Jam’s trip was even stranger.

I really don’t understand how Turbo Jam even made it to me. I was told it would be sent UPS or FedEx so I gave my home address. We don’t have mail delivery here but since it was being sent by carrier I wasn’t worried. Well it came by US Mail instead. On the box was written NMR (shorthand for no mail receptacle) so obviously the mail tried to deliver it to my house then that address crossed out and changed to our po box. We don’t have anything saying to send or forward mail to the post office since we use the post office for all our mail already. I don’t know how they connected our house address to the post office box but that’s what happened. It was at the post office late this morning. I’m amazed I got it and not surprised at the delay now that I know what happened.

So I did the Learn & Burn of Turbo Jam yesterday and today. Talk about uncoordinated. I was just flailing around it seemed. Oh well. I’ll figure it out. She goes from move to move with no break to think. I kept tripping over myself. I also did the 20 minute workout today. I was sweating but didn’t feel I really “exercised”, just flailed around. Plus, I couldn’t tell which side we were supposed to be working or when to switch. Oh well, at least it wasn’t a struggle and I never felt like quitting. I just need to practice. It was actually a bit fun and I think will be more so as I learn the routines better. This is something that would be great fun in a real group, but my gym doesn’t offer it. I’m not using the weighted gloves. I want to learn what I’m doing first.

I’m eager to try Rockin Body tomorrow. I think I may be a bit sore around my sides from all the bending and twisting though.

We went to Subway yesterday and again today. Yesterday was because we were frantically working on finishing our taxes and today was to celebrate finishing them. It’s the only place we can eat out without blowing our diet and the kids enjoy.

I’ve eaten the tub of salad greens and need to buy another. Yesterday’s dinner was half an apple and a slice of cheddar cheese after Turbo Jam workout before heading off for water aerobics.

My husband was wanting hot dogs for dinner one night. Well, I decided to try tofu dogs rather than greasy additive laden regular hot dogs. I also bought whole wheat buns for them. They were surprisingly very good. My son doesn’t like hot dogs very much but he really liked these. We all did. I will have to buy them more often.

I fear I’m getting sick. My throat is raw and starting to get chest and head congested with possibly fever. Ugh. Oh well, at least I’ll be well before we leave rather than getting sick right before leaving like last summer. I hope I feel ok tomorrow because it is the kids last dog mushing race. I’d hate to have them miss it because I’m sick.
